Seven blood donors – all born on 10 June 1998, the day Scotland kicked off their last World Cup campaign – are lending their voices to a national appeal for more young people to come forward and support patients across the country. Dionne, Chris, Prasanna, Sammi, Rory, Kyle and Blair, our ‘Team 98’ represent a new generation of donors helping safeguard Scotland’s blood supplies at a critical time.

Prasanna lives in Edinburgh with his wife and works as a chef at the Hard Rock Cafe. ‘No two days are ever exactly the same.’ His inspiration to donate came close to home. ‘My wife is a frequent blood donor and she was actually the one who motivated me.’

As young people, we’re in a really unique position where we can make a genuine difference with something so simple

For him, the motivation is simple. ‘I’d say that as young people, we’re in a really unique position where we can make a genuine difference with something so simple. Donating blood doesn’t take much time, but it can save someone’s life, maybe even more than one. It’s a small act of kindness that can mean everything to someone else and their family. Being able to help in that way is incredibly powerful, and it’s something I think more people our age should be proud to be part of.’

Prasanna gives blood at Edinburgh Blood Donor Centre. ‘The staff are always very welcoming and professional. Working in hospitality can mean busy schedules, but the donation appointments are quite flexible and don’t take too long. I just plan it on a day when I’m free or around my shifts.’

He’s looking forward to the World Cup: ‘I’ll definitely be supporting Scotland during the World Cup! Go Scotland!’
