Seven blood donors – all born on 10 June 1998, the day Scotland kicked off their last World Cup campaign – are lending their voices to a national appeal for more young people to come forward and support patients across the country. Dionne, Chris, Prasanna, Sammi, Rory, Kyle and Blair, our ‘Team 98’ represent a new generation of donors helping safeguard Scotland’s blood supplies at a critical time.

Blair lives in Dundee with his girlfriend, their dog, Alma, and another huge life change on the way. ‘My girlfriend is pregnant and due in September, so this will be my last World Cup before becoming a Dad.’ A primary school teacher for four years, Blair currently teaches Primary 7. ‘It can be a tough job but it’s something I really enjoy, even on the tricky days.’

My Mum worked in blood transfusion when I was a wee boy. She always told us how important it was.

Blood donation has always been part of Blair’s family. ‘My Mum worked in blood transfusion when I was a wee boy. She always told us how important it was.’ Sadly Blair’s mum died in 2023. Blair says, ‘I plan to continue donating as a wee nod to her.’

With a demanding job, Blair fits donation around the school year. ‘It’s quite difficult to go during the week due to work commitments, so I try and go during school holidays.’ He gives blood at Ninewells Hospital and keeps things simple. ‘I usually just sit on my phone to pass the time.’

Football has always run alongside his life. Blair is a Dundee United fan and also plays for Dundee Violet Juniors. His World Cup birthday is well documented at home. ‘My Mum and Dad brought up many times that I was born just in time for the game. I technically watched it with my Dad!’ The emotional rollercoaster stuck with him. ‘Going 1-0 up against Brazil and then losing was a pretty good indication of supporting Scotland – eternal disappointment, but hopefully that changes this summer.’

How to get involved

SNBTS is encouraging anyone aged 17 and over who is fit and well to register as a blood donor, check their eligibility and book an appointment.
