Blood donation appointments roll out across Scotland

Share

All blood donation across Scotland are now by appointment only. Appointments are bookable by calling 0345 90 90 999, or through our online donor account.

Why are you doing this now?

Giving blood by appointment helps us regulate blood stocks to better meet the needs of Scotland’s patients. When you book an appointment, we know hospitals can rely on your blood type on that date, ensuring there will always be enough for patients when needed.

Giving blood by appointment will also assist with current social distancing measures, as it will reduce queuing. Appointments have been used successfully for donors in many parts of the country for some time, and we are now expanding this.

Can I make an appointment now?

Appointments are available to book approximately four weeks before your session. Check whether yours is by searching your session on our homepage.

To book your appointment online, you'll need to create an online donor account. You can do this by looking in the top right corner of the website and clicking the blue 'Register' button. Alternatively, if you already have an account, simply click the red 'Log in' button (this will appear as a red padlock if you are using a mobile or tablet).

The 'Register' and 'Log in' buttons are in the top right corner of the site.

What is the online donor account?

Our new online donor account enables donors to make, view and cancel blood donation appointments. You can also use it to update a number of personal details, including your address.

How can I book an appointment?

You will be able to book an appointment by:

  • phoning 0345 90 90 999
  • getting in touch via our online contact form
  • as detailed above, some sessions will be bookable through the online donor account. Sessions are bookable from 15 April onwards.

How far in advance can I book an appointment?

Moving forwards, appointments will be bookable four weeks in advance of the session. However, due to the fast-tracked rollout of the scheme, there will be a period in which sessions become appointment based within one week. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

How will I know when to book in?

If you are due to give blood within the next week, please contact us.

We will we will contact you by text if we are particularly in need of your blood group and need you to book your appointment. Also, please do check your Donor Health Check which will arrive in the post if we need your blood group.
