Scotland’s plasma donors: An update
Scotland now has 1,203 incredible plasma donors - thank you. But to help meet patient needs, we aim to welcome more. In the next few months, we’d love another 1,000 very special people to come forward.
Why does this matter?
Each year, Scotland needs to grow our donor base by around 1,000 new donors.
This is because UK plasma can now to be used to make immunoglobulin (IVIG) - a lifesaving medicine used to treat over 50 serious conditions, including Guillain-Barré syndrome and haemolytic disease in newborns.
Plasma is collected at Scotland’s five blood donor centres, in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.

Could you be a plasma donor?
You must be:
- at least 60kg
- able to donate at Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness donor centres
- willing to spare 60-90 minutes each time you give plasma
You can be:
- male or female (new female donors must give blood at least once first)
- any blood type (although at the moment we’re particularly keen to hear from people with B+ and AB- blood types)
Plasma donors can give every four weeks, and we’d love to welcome you 4-6 times a year.
