Happy World Blood Donor Day!

Share

Every year on June 14, the world comes together to celebrate World Blood Donor Day, a tribute to the heroes who donate blood and save lives every single day.

This day also honours the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the scientist who discovered the ABO blood group system, revolutionising modern medicine.

What's the ABO blood group system?

The ABO blood group system is a classification of human blood based on the presence or absence of two antigens, A and B, on the surface of red blood cells. People can have type A, B, AB (both antigens), or type O (neither antigen), and this determines who they can safely donate to or receive blood from. It was discovered by Karl Landsteiner in 1901 and remains essential for safe blood transfusions today.

How is World Blood Donor Day celebrated around the world?

Blood transfusion services across the globe mark the day with:

  • Blood donation sessions in hospitals, schools and community centres
  • Awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of safe blood
  • Advertising campaigns to bring in more donors
  • Thank-you events for regular donors

World Blood Donor Day is more than just a date - it's a global celebration of kindness. Every donation is a gift of life, and every donor is a quiet hero.

So whether you’re a first-time donor or a regular lifesaver, 14 June is a day for you.

Thank you for giving blood.
