Zika virus: Florida update

Zika Virus has been found in Florida, so from Monday 3rd October we are introducing some new rules for visitors to this part of the USA.

  • Travellers to Florida who have been well during and after their trip can give blood after 28 days
  • Travellers to Florida who have been unwell during their trip or during the 28 days afterwards can give blood after 6 months.
  • Travellers to other parts of mainland USA can give blood as usual.

Why are we introducing this new rule?

Zika virus infection is usually mild, but it can cause serious birth defects if a mother is infected during pregnancy. There is a small risk that a blood donor could have picked up Zika Virus while on holiday in Florida. So, rather than take any chances, we are asking travellers to Florida to wait before giving blood. This keeps our blood supply as safe as possible for pregnant women and their unborn babies.
