Information for travellers to Italy

From Monday 2nd October, we will be asking blood and platelet donors who have travelled to some areas of Italy to wait before donating. This is because of an outbreak of Chikungunya Fever, a viral infection spread by mosquitoes.

Which donors are affected?

Any donors who have travelled to the Italian region of Lazio, including Rome and its surrounding areas.

I’ve travelled to Lazio – how long do I have to wait?

You will have to wait at least four weeks after your return before donating. If you have been unwell during your trip, or in the four weeks after your return, you may have to wait longer. Please call our helpline on 0345 90 90 999, or email us for advice before coming to a session.

I’ve been to Italy, but not Lazio?

You can donate as soon as you get back. It’s still important to tell us about your travel, so we do the right tests on your blood.
