Mairi and Alex's story

Share

Like many women, Mairi needed blood after childbirth.

Mairi, from Kirkaldy said, 'Giving blood was something I had always thought about doing. I just never got around to doing it.

'I was delighted to become became pregnant at the end of 2014 with my second child. My pregnancy progressed as normal, but during labour I had to have an emergency caesarean section. I also had a massive hemorrhage and lost 3.5 litres of blood.

'I needed four emergency transfusions – this means more than half the blood in my body was replaced. Thankfully, my wee boy Alex was born fit and well. He is the love of my life. And now, thanks to the NHS team who looked after me and the people who donated their blood, I am still alive, almost fully recovered and able to look after my wee boy.

'To the donors out there whose blood I received and to everyone who donates - Thank you. You are doing a great thing. To anyone who is thinking of donating but just not got round to it yet, please do give blood. You are making a positive difference to someone's life and you never know when you may be in need yourself.'
