Gillian from Kirriemuir has a rare blood disorder, called Red Cell Aplasia, which means that she needs to receive blood transfusions every few weeks just to stay alive. They're not ordinary transfusions either. Gillian can only be transfused with blood that's been screened for specific antibodies. Gillian has received 390 units and for each unit she uses SNBTS has to test 50 donations to find the exact match, 18,000 donations have been tested for her treatment so far. Gillian's daughter Libby has inherited the same disorder and, though stable now, may also become dependent on blood transfusions later in life. "Without blood donors I wouldn't be here today, nor would my daughter," says Gillian.
