Tissues and Cells

Supporting specialist services in Scotland

Our role is to co-ordinate, procure, process, test, store and supply human tissue and cells such as:

  • bone for orthopaedic surgery
  • heart valves for cardiac surgery - particularly in children
  • stem cells for bone marrow transplant patients
  • skin for burns victims
  • islet cells for type 1 diabetes patients

The provision of a 24 hour service and collaboration with procurators fiscal, pathologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals ensures that all clinical demand is met.

A wide network of information and support is provided to the families of donors to help them understand the work of the organ and tissue donation programme.
