Supply Chain

Donor Services, Processing and Testing, Logistics

To expertly balance supply and demand of blood components, the three departments that make up the Supply Chain operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to meet the transfusion needs of patients in Scotland.

Donor Services

The job of maintaining a safe and sufficient supply of blood starts with the recruitment of new donors and the care of those who have already made a commitment to give blood. Donor Services is also responsible for planning, publicising and co-ordinating the blood collection programme. There are five permanent Blood Donor Centres in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness. Blood is also collected within communities and workplaces across Scotland.

Processing and Testing
Working together with Donor Services, Processing and Testing is responsible
for turning blood donations into safe, tested, high quality blood components ready for transfusion. Processing and Testing work round the clock to ensure each blood donation is processed, tested, labelled and released for patient care within 24-48 hours.

Logistics
Logistics and transport complete the link by ensuring donations and blood components, and even our staff, are delivered to the right place at the right time. What's more our drivers are on call to respond to blue light emergencies anytime of the day or night.
