Frequently asked questions

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the new national centre.

Why does SNBTS need a new national centre?
Although SNBTS' laboratories currently meet regulatory requirements, they will soon be required to match the ever more stringent regulatory standards demanded of the pharmaceutical industry. Following successive appraisal workshops, it was decided that the best way to do this and to ensure the safe future supply of blood, tissues and cells for patients in Scotland would be to consolidate several of SNBTS' core activities and related services within a single, future proof building.

Why was Heriot Watt Research Park chosen as the location?
Out of all the options considered, Heriot Watt Research Park scored highest from a staff, financial and service delivery perspective, and taking into account a range of non-financial benefits, estimated costs and risk assessments.

How will the national centre be funded?
The national centre will be funded through what is known as the Non-Profit Distributing (NPD) model. Through a process of competitive dialogue with potential bidders for the project, NPD aims to ensure best value for money.

Will the proposed changes affect where I give blood?
No, the development of the national centre will not make any difference to where you donate and you will be able to continue attending your local donor centre or one of our mobile donating sessions.

What is the Scottish Futures Trust?
The Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) is an independent company, established by the Scottish Government in 2008, with a responsibility to deliver value for money across all public infrastructure investment. SFT works closely with the public sector to seek and deliver improved value for taxpayers.
