Better Blood Transfusion

Enhancing patient care through safe transfusion practice

The Better Blood Transfusion Programme (BBTP) was established in 2003, and in 2006 they merged with the Effective Use of Blood Group (EUB) to form Better Blood Transfusion (BBT).

BBT is a multi-disciplinary team, managed and supported centrally in Edinburgh. There are 21 Transfusion Practitioners based within each of the 14 NHSScotland (NHSS) Health Boards.

The aim of the BBT team is to promote safe, effective, efficient and appropriate transfusion for patients. The team works directly with hospital staff using audit, research and blood data management. They also work to implement quality improvement strategies, while developing
and facilitating transfusion training through a combination of printed materials, e-learning modules and face to face teaching.
